Hi All, It’s a day to wish our Teachers! Listen to this heart warming episode dedicated to ALL teachers. I’ve been able to share a lot of information about Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, an Inspiring teacher around the independence time, whose Birthday we celebrate as Teachers Day. I’ve taken the liberty to speak of many other inspiring teachers from the past and present. EPISODE-024 TEACHER’S DAY SPECIAL

[0.08] Siyona: Good Morning Everyone. Welcome to my podcast ‘Little Mind Chats’. Minds are Little, not our Thoughts. I’m your host Siyona.

[0.17] Hmmm so why are we having an episode on Saturday instead of Sunday? It’s because, today is ‘TEACHERS DAY’. This episode is my tribute to all the fantastic teachers who were here, are here and will be here.

[0.35] I everyday recite

[0.46] Wooo wo wo … What does that mean? It simply means that our teacher is the first God we ever meet. Rubbish! I don’t meet teachers as soon as I was born. I just meet my parents. Teachers come way after that! You’re right! That’s why they say Parents are our first teachers.

[1.09] But why all this focus on teachers today? What is teachers Day? Today in reality is the birthday of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. So? Why does his birthday have to be celebrated as Teacher’s day? Well, we need to understand that first.

[1.29] Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5th September 1888 in Tiruttani of Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, India. He did his MA in Philosophy from Madras Christian College in 1911. His thesis was published when he was just 20 years old. He was India’s most distinguished twentieth-century scholars of comparative religion and philosophy.

[1.58] He was a professor at several universities like the University of Mysore, University of Calcutta and even the University of Oxford in 1920. Hang on! Oxford University? But India didn’t have its independence back then. Yes, you’re right. He did not need Independence to prove his intellectual capability to the world! This obviously attracted quite a few awards like the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India and a knighthood in 1931. Oooo a Knighthood! How cool is that!!

[2.39] He even won the Templeton Prize in 1975 and honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963.

[2.51] Nonetheless, he was the first Vice President of India and the second President of Independent India. His name was nominated for the Nobel Prize for 5 consecutive years. Wow! What an inspirational Teacher.

[3.10] He believed that. When many of his students were keen on celebrating his birthday, he suggested the day be dedicated to the Teachers. And So, since 1967, This inspirational teacher’s birthday is celebrated as ‘Teachers day’!

[3.35] Unfortunately, Google still doesn’t show up his name in the list of ‘Greatest teachers of all time’. Hmmm That’s not fair!! Hope you noted it Mr. Sundar Pichai.

[3.48] Now let’s see other prominent teachers from our past and Present. Here, in India, we’ve had some incredible teachers like Brihaspati, Shukracharya, Dronacharya, Shankaracharya, Chanakya, Swami Vivekananda and most recently Dr Abdul Kalam. They have all been the back bone of our nation, by teaching, nurturing and creating some of the best leaders our country has seen.

[4.19] The west has a fair share of it’s own teachers too. Like Maria Montessori, Hellen Keller, Mark Twain, Justin Trudeau. What? Justin Trudeau? The Prime minister of Canada was a teacher too?? Yes! That’s true. Justin Trudeau taught at schools in Vancouver in Canada.

[4.42] How about now? Do we have some great teachers NOW?? My answer would be YES OFCOURSE!! In every part of the world!

[4.52] Like this Palestinian teacher Hanan Al Hroub. In 2016 she was the second winner of the Global Teacher Prize. She uses a specialised approach. She developed herself, which uses play that is aimed at resolving violence and tension. She bought in dramatic change in children who were emulating what they saw in the war hit country.

[5.20] We also have some visionary teachers like Salman Khan. He’s the founder of Khan academy (no! not the Bollywood Actor), and Byju Raveendran. We all know him, He’s the founder of Byju’ s. They’ve both done a fantastic job in helping us get that extra help in our journey of Education. They’re the beacons who are trying their best to teach every child in every corner of this earth. I really hope they succeed.

[5.51] But with all this, there are times, when we as kids forget about the respect our teachers deserve from us. I think we need to hold back each time we feel like criticising our teachers. For whatever reason. They always deserve our love and respect.

[6.10] Thank you teachers, for all that you’ve kept giving us regardless of the troubles you go through and you’ve all always put up a brave, smiling and of course a strict face too.

[6.24] When I was in second grade, I was very lucky. Because, I had the best teacher a second grader could ever wish for. His name was Mr. Robinson. He would drive us into new world that we never knew of. He was the best at drawing, making jokes, helping to sort things out. I miss those days. But I’m at other nice teachers like the ones I have now. Although I haven’t met them personally yet.

[6.52] Currently, I have 2 favourite teachers. Mr Anand who teaches us Science and Mrs Pooja who teaches us English. Mr Anand, I always look forward to your classes. They’re fun, engaging and of course, informative. Mrs Pooja, I love the way you encourage all of us to show our art and other things. Thank you so very much! And your lessons sometimes teach me new words and their meanings.

[7.23] I have some guests here with me today. Some of them are my friends I play with every evening. They’re here to appreciate and thank their own teachers too.

[7.34] Let’s start with my 3-year-old brother who’s keen to wish all the teachers.

[7.39] Runav: Hi. I am Runav. Happy Teacher’s Day!

[7.46] Siyona: Here’s Pragna.

[7.47] Pragna: My name is Pragna. I’m in third standard. My age is 8 and I want to thank my teacher. My teacher name is Susheela. She teaches me Kannada. So, I like her. Even I too like Kannada. So, I wanted to thank her. She is very kind and she will always be smiling. So, I like her.

[8.17] Siyona: Now its Nabhanya’s turn to wish.

[8.19] Nabhanya: My name is Nabhanya. I am 7 years old. I am in second grade. I want to thank Pooja Ma’am for teaching me science and being my class teacher. Pooja Ma’am, “I love you a lot.] Happy Teacher’s Day.

[8.44] Siyona: Here’s Arjav. He’s in Grade 7.

[8.48] Arjav: Hi. My name is Arjav. I’m 12 years old and I’m in 7th grade. I would like to thank Gangakka and Sundaranna for teaching me Maths, Science, English and Social Studies. Happy Teacher’s Day.

[9.03] Siyona: Now, Nisha who’s in grade 7 too.

[9.07] Nisha: Hey my name is Nisha. My favourite teacher is Pushpa Anand Ma’am, she teaches Hindi. I love her because she makes reading so much fun and interesting. She welcomes participation in the class and does not get offended though silly questions are asked. For consideration, lovingly attitude and respect for each individual in the class makes her special teacher. The best part of Pushpa Anand Ma’am is that, she engages us with inspiring stories and gives us extra information. Happy Teacher’s Day Pushpa Anand Ma’am and to all my respectful teachers.

[9.43] Siyona: And finally, Shashank who’s in grade 10.

[9.46] Shashank: Hi everyone. My name is Shashank and my age is 15 years. I’m studying in 10th standard at Florence English High School, Bangalore. My favourite teacher is Aishwarya Ma’am because she has played a very important role in my life. She was always there to support me. My teacher is the best and she will be always the best. On this special occasion I wish to convey my best wishes and greetings to all teachers and all those who helped me to attain the success in academics. Happy Teacher’s Day.
